INSTITUTIONS: APPLE MUSIC ,YOUTUBE & SPOTIFY

Are streaming sites good for the music industry e.g. Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube

These are all good because all types of music is exposed to a wider audience allowing the artist to be recognised better and increase their audience count and target to others ages and interests. It is easier to access as these platforms can be reached through smart phones, computers, laptops and ipads meaning that a range of devices can access the music they require. Another reason why this is good for the music industry is that it reduces piracy rates as the free trails allows the people to us the applications using the correct legal information required such as credit cards and names etc. These applications are easy to use with features such as replay, shuffle functions that will reduce piracy, these applications are also tailored to the individuals interest with recommended artists depending on their recently played and searched.

What are the implications of this on you as an artist?

There however implications with these platforms for an artist some artists are encouraged or forced to sign deals with these music giants in the name of self interest and making more money and increasing profits.

In addition some artists may not necessarily agree with their contract terms but may be forced to sign the contract as it could be the only way forward in their music career and become recognised and heard.

Sometimes, artists get less revenue as the applications take most of the money from monthly subscriptions and adverts which is making more than the music of the artist.

Although there are arguments for the reduction of piracy we must be aware that piracy may still be encouraged if they exclusive rights to certain types of music e.g. Kanye West album only released on Tidal, people did not want to pay for Tidal, resorted to piracy
